Walgreens has a little set of toddler t-shirts with extremely gendered (and kind of unpleasant) sayings on them. Like, one lavender one says, "I'm the princess, mommy's the queen, and daddy just works here."

It would be very, very, very wrong of me to get the small fanperson the black one that says, "Fathers, lock up your daughters."

Just in case you hadn't had your dose of utterly clueless male privilege today, the Flick Filosopher shares a questionnaire put out by the U.K. multiplex chain Cineworld.

Just to give you some context, when asked "If you could play the part of one superhero which would it be?", all the possible answers are men. Black Widow and Catwoman, meanwhile, are listed under, "Which of the Superheroe's [sic] leading ladies would you most like to rescue?"

I'm pretty sure that Balack Widow would like a word with them. Several words, in fact. Catwoman would probably just claw their eyes out.

I mean seriously, the fuck? And lest anyone think it doesn't matter, the first question Frog asks about any character in a book, movie, comic, etc, is whether that character is "a boy or girl." And meanwhile, she has already absorbed the narrative that girls get captured by the bad guy, although thankfully, she's just as happy for girls to rescue them when she's making the story up herself. It hurts my head that I have to constantly fight against the narrative our culture gives her.

I feel kind of like I'm moving through pudding today, but that's depressing, and I don't want to type about depressing stuff.

I am a little frightened to realize that my latest fandom is Phineas and Ferb. I started watching it with the small fanperson, and now have it streaming on my computer (available on Netflix and Amazon, free for Prime members) while I work.

I did marathon Game of Thrones last week. Maybe this is an antidote.

Anyone else watch Phineas and Ferb? I enjoy it kind of ridiculously. I bought the soundtracks. No lie.

Has anyone watched the US version of House of Cards? If you're sitting there going, "buh?" this is Netflix's first original series, made available all at once (all 13 eps) on their streaming option. It stars Kevin Spacey as a Congressman who, when he is passed over for Secretary of State by a new president, embarks on a truly masterful scheme. The ads say a scheme of revenge, but...well, spoilers.

I'm on episode 11 now, and you know, this show is usually the sort that I hear raves about but leaves me completely cold (see Dexter and Breaking Bad), because ( very vague spoilers ), but I really can't stop watching this.

Just a small thing:

Can we not perpetuate the equation of "still living with his* parents" as a hallmark of loserdom? There are lots of reasons people live with their parents, be they economic, caregiving (in either direction), or just plain enjoying each others' company. I realize that being nerds ourselves and thus engaging in many of the activities people use to symbolize "having no life," we are left with little to throw at people, but can we lose that stereotype, please?

(Yes, I am a little sensitive to this because of slashspouse's background. For that matter, we lived with his parents while he went to paralegal school so that we didn't have to go into more debt for his tuition. Like I said: many reasons.)

Not-Quite Grading Hell Theater: Broccoli Test Revisted

It is the first day of classes. I am wearing an awesome dress, I have my classlist printed out, and my head is pounding. I need some happy, stat. So, a favorite GHT.

Yes, I have done this before, twice, even, but whole new fandoms have arisen since then!

As explained by gwyn:

sherrold was the one who came up with the broccoli test idea when she was living in L.A. with a friend, C. As legend, and my mind filling in blanks, would tell it, Sandy and C were at the grocery store, on opposite ends of the produce section, and Sandy was trying to tell C to pick up some broccoli without shouting across the store at her. No amount of pantomiming and mouthing of the words could get the point across to C, and Sandy apparently told her (we were all in the midst of Professionals-mania then), "Doyle would have known Bodie wanted him to pick up some broccoli with just a raise of his eyebrow!" or something like that. Hence, Bodie and Doyle would have passed the broccoli test.

So, do your favorite characters pass the broccoli test? Do they accidentally buy carrots? Do they end up throwing the broccoli at each other?

For years, Mary Margaret found herself buying Broccoli, even though she actually hates broccoli. When Snow learned that broccoli was a favorite of Charming's, it suddenly made sense. True love is like that.

Myka knows perfectly well Pete loves broccoli, but there is no way she is doing his shopping. No, not even if she's there anyway. Okay, maybe she was going to buy some anyway. Pete knows Myka wants broccoli, but he has a bad feeling about it. She'll than him later, when it turns out to have e. coli on it or something. Artie doesn't actually know whether Claudia like broccoli or not, but he's getting her some anyway, because all she eats is pizza and oatmeal scotchies. Claudia doesn't guess. She just hacks the grocery's computer to find out what items were bought with Artie's debit card. Jinx, meanwhile, brought pizza, because he knows everyone was lying about liking broccoli. People lie about the weirdest things.

(Okay, technically, psychic powers are cheating.)

PS TNT peeps: I think it's safe to say that the entire party fails the broccoli test on a regular basis. Spectacularly. However, they seem to end up with a fairly tasty salad most times.

I know! I'm ACTUALLY do a Grading Hell Theater!

For those of you who have never been here for one, Grading Hell Theater is when (1) Lucy is grading a LOT and (2) needs entertainment while she does it which is (3) where you guys come in. I'm actually almost done, but this one seemed like fun.

1. What terms from fiction do you find yourself using in everyday life/wish were better known because man, they're really useful and you wish you could use them?

2. Likewise, what terms from one fictional source do you find yourself wishing all of fandom knew, because it's really, really useful, darnit.

Okay, now I'm whining.

Exactly one week from today, I turn 43. I have generally not been one to sulk about my age, but for obvious geek reasons, giving up 42 is a bit depressing. Also, my fatigue issues are at an all-time high (low?), I have a wretched sinus infection that's making my head feel like it's stuffed with cotton, I'm not doing Yuletide for the second year in a row because I just don't have the energy to be fannish about anything I'm reading or watching, I have so much grading backed up that I'm just in denial about the whole thing...

Yeah.

Post something pretty for me? Anything? I really just need to get through this week.
